Fire destroys FFA barn in Coopersville

COOPERSVILLE, Michigan (WZZM) - A fire on the campus of Coopersville Public Schools destroyed an important part of the district's education program.  The barn at the school was a big piece of the district's Future Farmers of America program.

Friday morning district employees noticed smoke coming from the large pole barn structure.  When local fire departments arrived the fire was well on its way to destroying the building.  The barn had about 36 pigs inside.  Most of them died in the fire.  Just a few made it out.  They are being cared for at a local farm.

Students involved in FFA spend time in the barn caring for their livestock before, during and after school.  Coopersville Superintendent Kevin O'Neill says the students develop deep bonds with their animals.
