Coopersville boy injured after igniting ammo

COOPERSVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Ottawa County deputies say a 12-year-old Coopersville boy did not intend to hurt himself when he put a lighter to a rifle cartridge in his bedroom.

Deputies say they were called to a home in the 200 block of Valley Oak Dr. around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.  The initial report they heard was that a child was injured in an accidental shooting.

Officers say the boy had an injury to his neck.  They say the boy had found a 30-06 cartridge from his father's hunting rifle, and put a lighter to it.  The cartridge ignited, and the boy was hit in the neck by a piece of the cartridge casing.

Deputies say the ammunition discharge was "accidental," and the boy was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Police: Conklin man kills two horses over alleged affair

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM)- Ottawa County detectives say a man, upset with his wife, took out his anger by fatally stabbing two horses.

Dennis Finkler, 47,  is charged with two counts of animal cruelty and malicious destruction of property.

It all started Friday night, when Finkler and his wife had an argument at Bramer Equestrians Stables, where they boarded a horse.

Finkler was accusing his wife of having an affair with the owner of the stables.  They eventually left, but investigators believe he showed back up, later that night.  Finkler allegedly stabbed his wife's Quarter Horse and the owner's 8-year old Palomino named "Gambler".

Finkler was released Monday afternoon on a $3,000 bond.  He is due back in court later this month.

My Home Town~Conklin

My Home Town~Conklin

CONKLIN, Mich (via Hawaii) - Mrs. Preisner grew up in Conklin Mich. She is currently living in Hawaii with her husband Matt who is serving in the United States Army. She reminds all of us what is really important in life. The things happening in small towns throughout America. This article was written to her friends as a facebook posting, because this hardworking military wife was homesick. God bless all the Military families who miss their hometowns!

My Home Town~Conklin by Rebecca Preisner

My home town doesn’t look like much to a passer by…….

There’s just a couple abandoned buildings, a little church, a feed store, a bar, and a couple dozen houses or so. But to my eyes I see so, so much more. I see the old Hardware store before it closed and then was demolished years later.
