Deputies: Huffing driver takes out power pole

POLKTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Marne man is in jail after Ottawa County deputies say he crashed his truck after huffing an inhalant.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of 68th Avenue and Garfield Street near Coopersville.

Investigators say the 20-year-old driver was inhaling a canned air duster when he lost control and hit a power pole.

The collision brought down electrical lines, closing both roads at the intersection.

The driver was not injured. He's being held until his court appearance on charges related to the crash.

Biker injured in crash near Coopersville

COOPERSVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Interstate 96 is back open near Coopersville after an early morning crash injured a motorcyclist.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. Friday on westbound I-96 by the 48th Avenue exit.Deputies say the 66-year-old motorcyclist from Grand Rapids was hit from behind by a minivan. The van's driver told investigators he did not see the bike's taillight in time.

The biker was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital. He was reportedly in serious but stable condition.

The crash shut down one lane of westbound I-96 for about 90 minutes.

Victim named in deadly Ottawa Co. crash

TALLMEDGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Coopersville woman is dead after being hit by a pickup truck while jogging Sunday evening.

It happened on Johnson Street, just east of 48th, between Coopersville and Allendale. Police have identified the woman as 35-year-old Rebecca Talsma. Deputies say the person who hit her was a 16-year-old driver.

The driver was going west on Johnson Street when he crossed into the eastbound lane to pass a vehicle. Talsma was jogging the same direction on the opposite side of the road, when the driver hit her from behind. The teenager was not hurt.

Ottawa County Sheriff's Deputies are still investigating the crash.

Military Wall Of Honor at Coopersville High School

Warren Warber, a recently retired teacher from Coopersville High School, has started a project of remembrance. Warren was the industrial arts teacher for many, many years at the school. Although he was never able to enter any of the military branches because of a broken back, he  wants to have members of the military who graduated from Coopersville,  remembered on a wall near the high school’s west entrance where students getting on and off the buses each day are made aware of the sacrifices of war.

The Coopersville Rotary along with several other veterans groups are working with Mr. Warber on this project. The wall has been erected and now it is just a matter of people submitting their photo and military records to be posted on the wall. Several veterans from World War II have already sent their information along. Flames at Coopersville business after tractor hits power pole

COOPERSVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Several Ottawa County fire departments responded to flames at a Coopersville business Friday afternoon.

Crews were dispatched to Die-Verse Solutions, 15630 68th Ave., south of I-96, after 4 p.m.

No one was in the building when the fire started, according to firefighters, but the building was damaged. Details on the extent of the damage aren't yet available.

The shop owners said they suspect an electrical surge is to blame, since a tractor had crashed into a nearby power pole beforehand.

Holy Spirit Parish at 2230 Lake Michigan Dr. NW in Grand Rapids, MI is once again holding their Community Festival on Saturday & Sunday, September 19 & 20. Saturday hours are 7 – 10pm and Sunday is 12 Noon until 6pm. Everyone is welcome at this festival.

Saturday evening will feature a Euchre Tournament with a $10 entrance fee to be paid before the tournament begins. Many raffles held between games at no extra charge. 1st & 2nd place prize money payout to be determined by the number of players.
