West Michigan movies were not box office hits

How did movies shot in West Michigan do at the theatres in 2012?  Let's just say that none of them was a hit.

The movie “Touchback” grossed $204,232 domestically, according to Box Office Mojo.  The film was partially shot at Pal’s Dinner in Cascade and in the Coopersville area.   According to Box Office Mojo,  “Touchback” ranked 289th out of 655 films.  It opened in 69 theatres, including some in the Grand Rapids area.  “Touchback” starred Brian Presley and Kurt Russell.  The film goes back in time and was about a high school football player who got a second chance and along the way discovered what was really important in life.

Another movie made in West Michigan, “Playback” was the second lowest grossing movie in 2012.  It made just $264 during its box office debut and played in only one theatre.  "Pla

Credit union to break ground for new Coopersville office

My Personal Credit Union (MPCU) will host a groundbreaking ceremony at noon on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, for its future office at 1147 W. Randall Street in Coopersville.  The branch, which will be a stand-alone facility near the Family Fare, is scheduled to open in mid-2013.

“This new, larger and more contemporary service facility will allow us to better serve our current members, while also providing comprehensive, convenient and affordable financial services for area residents,” MPCU President Daniel Baines said.

The new office will have drive up service lanes, a drive up ATM and Saturday hours.  “Area residents will be able to access everything from car loans and mortgages to Free Checking, mobile banking, online bill pay and financial planning services,” Baines said.  Members will also be able to use Co-op Network’s 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs.

Growth and development of ChoiceOne Bank’s brand in Coopersville was recently marked by groundbreaking, held September 17, 2012, to expand and renovate its current Coopersville branch office.

A crew from the Chicago-based advertising agency DDB spent time last week at Dietrich Orchards in Conklin, Michigan to shoot a documentary style commercial that will highlight the Dietrich family’s role as part of a team of apple suppliers for McDonald’s from throughout Michigan. The commercial will be launched in the McDonald’s national 2013 ‘Supplier Stories’ ad campaign. The campaign gives consumers a chance to see McDonald’s commitment to quality when selecting top growers and suppliers across the country.

COOPERSVILLE — Companies looking for a model of how to maintain a highly skilled workforce might turn to the example set by an unlikely source, at least in West Michigan: a skilled trade union.

When Ryan Bennett, business agent of the West Michigan Plumbers, Fitters and Service Trades Local #174 based in Coopersville, hears companies complaining about the struggles of finding talented workers, he said he can’t help but notice that most of those companies don’t take an active role in developing their current and future workforces.

“We’ve kept an eye on the industry and stayed on top of where it’s going and figured out ways to teach our workers,” Bennett told MiBiz.
