COOPERSVILLE, Mich.—A holiday tradition is chugging through Coopersville again.

The Coopersville and Marne Railway’s Santa train runs every weekend through Dec. 21.  Families who board the train will be greeted by elves, who will escort children to sit with Santa.  Riders can also listen to a reading of “The Polar Express,” written by Grand Rapids native Chris Van Allsburg.  Every children on board will also receive a gift.

Each vintage passenger car on the Santa train is heated.  The Santa train’s departure schedule is as follows:

Live Reindeer at Silver Beach Carousel

Silver Beach Carousel has some jolly fun planned for the entire family! Come meet two live reindeer on Friday, Nov. 28, noon to 5 p.m., and Thursday, Dec. 18, 4 to 8:30 p.m. Come into Santa’s Christmas Corral in the Shadowland Ballroom where you can pet and have a professional keepsake photo taken with these friendly, gentle animals of North Pole fame.

My Town: Coopersville students are 'In The Heights'

COOPERSVILLE, Mich.-- Take  a trip to New York without ever leaving Coopersville this weekend, as a Tony Award-winner plays out on stage.

Coopersville High Theatre Co. begins its performances of "In The Heights" Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.  Shows will run through Nov. 22.  

"In The Heights"  transports the audience to the Big Apple's Washington Heights neighborhood,  where the community is on the brink of change.   "In The Heights" won the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Tickets to the Coopersville High School performances are available online at Center Stage Theatre's website.  The box office will also be selling tickets now through Friday, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

My Town: Diocese of Grand Rapids boosts tuition assistance; deadline nears

The Diocese of Grand Rapids is boosting tuition assistance for students, but time is running out to apply for it.

The deadline for applying for first round funding is Nov. 22.  The first round of grants will be announced in early February and distributed in early fall.

Bishop Walkowiak recently announced the Diocese is more than quadrupling tuition assistance, from $240,000 to $1 million each year.  The funding boost, made possible through donations and diocese scholarship accounts, is part of a three-year effort to make Catholic schools affordable to more families.  According to Private School Aid Service, even after all tuition assistance is distributed, Catholic school families still need $1.2 million a year.

The Wright Tallmadge Fire Department invites the community to this Open House in celebration of the communities continued support.

Families can enjoy a number of fun events from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, September 13. There will be appearances by helicopter - Trooper 2, equipment displays, K-9 demonstrations presented by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, car fire & extrication demonstrations, face painting & activities for children, food, giveaways & more.

The Open House is at O-1451 Leonard Street, in the same building as the Tallmadge Township Offices.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- The 2014-2015 school year is officially underway for West Michigan students.

On Sept. 2, which was the official start of classes for most schools, State Superintendent Mike Flanagan released this statement: 

"It’s a great day to be Back to School in Michigan !

Let me take a moment to wish everyone a positive and successful school year.

Our team here at the Michigan Department of Education, the State Board of Education, and I appreciate the hard work and daily dedication teachers, administrators, school board members, and other school staff devote to our children in Michigan.

My Town Coopersville: St. Michael's to dedicate new playground

COOPERSVILLE, Mich.--  Children at St. Michael's preschool have a new place to play.

The parish will cut the ribbon on its newly updated playground Monday, Sept. 8.   The ceremony will take place during a preschool open house, which runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 

St. Michael's held several fundraisers to cover the $8,000 cost of installing equipment that is approved for preschool age students.  Events included a classroom supply sale and Euchre party.

Classes at St. Michael's will begin Sept. 15. A couple spots are still available for the 2014-2015 school year. Interested families should contact the parish office at (616) 384-4026 for more information.
