I-96 reopens after large propane leak near Coopersville

POLKTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- An employee at Van Andel Propane received burns to his face and neck while filling a large tank near Coopersville.

Around 11 a.m. Friday, Brent Alan Phies, 50, was disconnecting a hose from a tank when it began spewing liquid propane in his face. Another employee turned turned off the emergency shutoff valve, but the the line continued to flow, spilling an estimated 200 to 300 gallons of propane.

The accident forced the closure of both directions of I-96 between 48th and 68th Avenue. The interstate reopened 15 minutes later after the propane leak was contained.

Phies was taken to Mercy Health in Muskegon where he was treated and released.
