Bold burglars target Ottawa County homes

SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - Over the past two months, police say burglars have broken into at least seven homes in northwest Ottawa County,  and possibly more in Muskegon County.

Lt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department says the break-ins have primarily taken place between eight in the morning and five in the afternoon. Typically the thieves are targeting more secluded areas of Spring Lake Township, Crockery Township, Coopersville and Fruitport.  Lt. Bennett says the burglars wait until no one is home and then force open a door or window.

"It's pretty apparent to us the individuals involved here do a little bit of recon as it relates to the habits of the homeowners,  when they leave for work, etc.," says Lt. Bennett.

"I was just shattered, I was upset," says 144th Avenue resident Melani Smith.

Smith's home was burglarized while she was visiting her mother in Iowa at Christmas.
