City Manager Blog - SummerFest 2011

Another SummerFest has come and gone and this year it even survived a number of fast moving storm fronts. Although the number of cars and visitors attending was lower than last year, those that braved the weather appeared to be enjoying themselves. Much credit goes to Cindy Timmerman and the Chamber of Commerce for SummerFest and the Rotary Club of Coopersville for their professional management of the Car Show. All-in-all SummerFest is a bright example of what happens when there is enthusiasm and cooperation amongst participants and sponsors. Excellent job to all!

Summerfest starts today!

Coopersville Summerfest featuring the Del Shannon Car Show is scheduled for August 8th – 13th.  In addition to all of the hometown favorite activities visitors have come to expect, event planners have many special celebrations planned to honor the 50th Anniversary of Del Shannon’s #1 hit “Runaway”.

Del Shannon, known to locals as Charles Westover, was a significant Rock & Roll Singer-Songwriter and Producer to many well-known artists such as Tom Petty, Johnny Carver and Jeff Lynne.  In the early days of Rock & Roll, the soon-to-be discovered band, The Beatles were Del’s opening act.  Prior to his untimely death, Del was under consideration to replace Roy Orbison in The Traveling Wilbury’s whose members included George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn and Bob Dylan.

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of “Runaway”, event planners have organized the following events for the public to enjoy:

COOPERSVILLE, MI - Normally on the last day of school, students and teachers are all smiles as they get a break from all the hard schoolwork, but at East and West Elementaries in Coopersville there was a feeling of sadness as their principal of 11 years was saying goodbye for the final time. Mr. Salo is retiring after 37 years in education.

Staff and students gathered to dedicate a rock in his honor. This huge rock has a plaque with a tribute on it so he will always be remembered as the wonderful leader that he was. Students cheered and held signs telling their principal that he is the best! Many people come and go, however few will leave such a positive lasting impact on students, staff, and families the way that Mr. Salo has. He will be greatly missed by all. Students will be in good hands though as their assistant principal Mrs. Marie DeGroot will be their new principal for East and West  Elementaries in the fall of 2011.
