Ottawa County hopes to save Lives with Driving Simulator

Ottawa County hopes to save Lives with Driving Simulator

Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department hopes to travel to every school district in Ottawa County before the end of the school year with a driving simulator.

Jeff Osbun, a freshman from Coopersville High School, has found out “there are a lot of crazy drivers out there.” Jeff did not have any problems while driving the simulator but there were others who crashed while texting or talking on the phone or drove with the simulated drunk driving goggles on.

Ottawa Count Sheriff’s Sgt., Steve Austin, said “it comes down to lack of experience, when referring to the high number of deadly accidents involving teenagers every year.” Several officers have been working with students and the simulator to point out distractions and to help students understand the need to drive without being distracted or impaired.

During this training, officers take the time to teach about Kelsey’s Law, something that takes effect on Friday, March 1, 2013.
